Struck By Lightning

  
    I'm currently reading the book Struck By Lightning: The Carson Phillips Journal by: Chris Colfer. It's about a teenage boy names Carson Phillips who's struggling through his last year of high school in the small town of Clover. He lives with his depressed single mother and has a strong relationship with his grandma who is living in a senior citizens home. You can say that he's messed up but honestly, he's just like every other teenager in the world: the world is out to get him. Through out the book, Carson makes side notes that hint at how much he dislikes the people around him and where he is in his life. He wants to be an editor for the New York Times when he's older and has a plan to get there, but it includes getting into Northwestern University. 

     While explaining why he hates his town and can't wait to graduate, he says “You don’t get to pick where you’re from, but you always have control of where you’re going.” I think that what he's saying is really true. He's saying that if you don't like where you are (where you've been brought up) you should follow your dreams and go where you feel like you belong. To him, that's Northwestern and he'll do anything to get in. He also says “...because a life without meaning, without drive or focus, without dreams or goals, isn't a life worth living.” Carson is saying that if you don't have any dreams or goals to pursue as you grow up, your life is boring. I think that the reason why he's saying this is because  he feels that his dreams are so important to him and he's trying to inspire others to pursue their's.
